Ministries

Whether you are young, or young at heart, we hope you will join us as we grow in God’s grace together and share His love through one of our many faith formation and service learning opportunities at Community. Beyond just reading and hearing the stories, our youth and family enjoy the fellowship of others as we connect our lives and actions to the teachings of the Old and New Testaments. Christian education and faith formation is an active and exciting piece of Community Lutheran’s ministry. There is something for everyone each Sunday during the Education hour from 9:30-10:30am during the school year. We can’t wait to see you there! Here are some of our opportunities:

  • Sunday School for Preschoolers ages 3-4 years
  • Rotational Sunday School for Kindergarten through 5th grade
  • Confirmation for 6-8th grade students
  • High School Youth Forum for Grades 9 and up
  • Adults Anonymous for Young Adults in their 20’s, 30′s, and early 40′s
  • Adult Forum and Great Passages of the Adult Bible Study

In addition there are several mid-week opportunities for study and fellowship in a small group setting including a Pastors’ Lectionary Bible Study on Wednesdays at 10:30am. Bring your Bibles and explore the lessons for the coming Sunday!

We are passionate about protecting the environment and leaving a smaller mark on our world.

In the Earthkeeping Ministry, we work to minimize our impact on the local environment. As a ministry we participate in community projects, as well as local clean-ups of the property and beyond.

Some inspiration:

“God writes the Gospel, not in the Bible alone, but also on trees, and in the flowers and clouds and stars.”   – Martin Luther

“The whole earth is a living icon of the face of God.” – St. John of Damascus

“Now if I believe in God’s Son and remember that He became man, all creatures will appear a hundred times more beautiful to me than before. Then I will properly appreciate the sun, the moon, the stars, trees, apples, as I reflect that He is Lord over all things.” – Martin Luther

The Christian Fellowship Ministry team develops social and recreational activities that promote Christian friendship in our church community and the greater Sterling community. We believe that ‘fellowship is worship’ and provide time and space for gatherings designed to bring people together to strengthen the bonds that help us, as a church community, reach out to each other and our neighbors. Every year we plan and invite members and guests to our Annual Church Picnic and Oktoberfest Celebration. Other events have ranged from attending Nationals baseball games to worshipping and having a Thanksgiving Dinner with the Martoma Church that shares our space.

Many members have expressed how important it is to be able to gather and socialize in ways that are unstructured. Getting to know each other through fun and meaningful fellowship allows us to develop even deeper bonds as we study and worship together.

The Fellowship team would like to invite anyone who shares a passion for bringing people together in fun ways to build friendships and community building to come join us as we plan and enjoy the fruits of our planning.

The Worship and Music Ministry works to bring the talents and treasures of the congregation together to enhance and inspire the weekly worship services. The act of worship, while led by the Pastors, requires many hands and voices. The ministry team coordinates the many tasks necessary to conduct worship. Members of all ages are welcomed and encouraged to participate in the worship experience in a variety of capacities, including Assisting Ministers, Acolytes, Altar Guild, Ushers, Lectors, Communion servers, and of course, musicians, both vocal and instrumental.

Chancel Choir

Our Full SATB Choir leads the liturgy every Sunday.  This group strives for the best execution of choral music and rehearses every Wednesday night at 7:30 in the Sanctuary.

Bell Choir

Our intergenerational handbell choir requires a working knowledge of music reading skills.  We enjoy making music together as an ensemble, and we perform handbell music using traditional and contemporary techniques.  This group meets every Wednesday night from 6:15 PM – 7:15 PM in our music room.

Folkmusique (Spirit!)

This group combines the talents of instrumentalists and vocalists to explore and perform different arrangements of folk hymns and folk styles.

Youth Choir

The Youth Choir is for all singers who are in 6th – 12th grade.  This group learns to sing differing styles of music in harmony and in tune.  We have sung in different languages, styles, and difficulties.  This group performs at least once a month and rehearses twice a month.

Children’s Choir

The Children’s Choir is for elementary students from 2nd – 5th grade.  It is a wonderful place for children to learn how to sing properly, in tune, and it is a beginning introduction to singing in harmony.   These children learn music reading, theory, and it is intended for a more involved education than the typical elementary music program from the school.  If you are looking for more experience for your child, this is a wonderful opportunity.  This groups rehearses in the sanctuary every Wednesday from 4:30 – 5:30 PM.

Beginning Choir

The Dovecote Choir is a new choir this year.  It is an introductory choir to singing for children 3 years of age to 1st grade.  It is a wonderful way to promote confident singing in young voices, and it will also help with reading skills in the very young ages.  This choir incorporates movement, rote singing, and confidence building to instill the love of music in all of the children.  We also teach beginning note reading that is simple and fun!  This choir will meet every Wednesday, beginning September 13,  at 4:00 – 4:30 PM.
