On Sunday, July 22, 27 campers made their way from the Washington Metropolitan DC and Delaware-Maryland Synods for a week of Confirmation Camp at Mar-Lu-Ridge. Three Confirmation campers and two sponsors, Daphne B. and Pastor Annabelle, went from Community. The camp concluded on Friday, July 27.
The theme for the week was “Freed from…Freed for…” and we talked about the Exodus story of God’s people Israel being freed from slavery in Egypt. We talked about how we are freed from sin and freed to live as unique, beloved children of God. That we are free to use our gifts and skills to serve God and the world in a variety of ways, including through service projects like making 100 person care kits for Lutheran World Relief.
Although it rained for a lot of the week, the campers remained in good spirits, met up with old friends from synod events, and made new friends. We learned in the morning and had camp activities in the afternoon. In the evening, there were games, snack, skits, and worship. Overall, it was a beautiful week in a beautiful place.
Here’s what some of the attendees had to say!:
- What was your favorite part of camp?
“I loved the Lego activity where each person had a different challenge (can’t see, speak, use hands, etc.) and we had to work together to build something. (I also loved Shock Rock, the ice cream social and chapel time).” – Katie N.
“Pool Time – it was where I could have fun and swim when it was hot.” – Bradley D.
“Worship was great! It was fantastic to experience different types of worship with lots of different people helping to lead – campers, counselors, pastors, bishops, young, old – and all in a beautiful setting.” – Pastor Annabelle
- Where did you see God?
“In the counselors and how they were always helpful and making sure everyone was happy and having a good experience. They were choosing to spend their summer working with kids at camp.” – Katie N.
“During service, when I was praying, and when I was saying the prayers for service.” – Bradley D.
“In the campers as they became friends and supported each other throughout the week.” – Pastor Annabelle
- What did you learn about your faith?
“That God has a plan and everyone has a part in it and brings different skills.” – Katie N.
“It happens everywhere, not just in church.” – Bradley D.
“I was reminded that it’s always good to keep stepping outside of your comfort zone as it can help keep our hearts open to God.” – Pastor Annabelle
- What did you learn about yourself?
“On the ropes course, I was climbing up the ladder and got scared, but was able to talk myself into going to the platform to get safely down. I learned I had to go up and overcome my fear.” – Katie N.
“I’m decent at saying prayer.” – Bradley D.
“As much as I love the outdoors, hiking, singing, crafting, and games, I don’t know that I’m a camper!” – Pastor Annabelle
- What’s one silly thing you’ll remember?
“My cabinmates baptizing my Mar-Lu-Ridge stuffed pig, “Marlie,” in the cabin bathroom sink.” – Katie N.
“Song time.” – Bradley D.
“Game time at Area 3 – I had so much fun playing soccer with the campers. It was chaos!” – Pastor Annabelle
