Formation & Education

Christian Education at CLC is for everyone from preschool to adults.

We offer preschool Sunday school with hands on activities, and for grades K-5th we follow a rotational schedule. The children learn through, games, science, arts and cooking the same lesson for 4 weeks. The 6-8 graders work towards understanding the Lutheran faith in their confirmation classes, and high schoolers dig deep in understanding being a Lutheran in their world of school and change. The adults have three different opportunities to learn about God and the Word, they also have a forum to discuss relevant faith topics.

Sunday School

Our Rotational Sunday School program for Kindergarten through 5th grade provides a multi-disciplinary approach to learning. Each session involves a 4-5 week study of scripture through art, science, cooking, games and more. Students are active and engaged, viewing the Word through a different lens each week. In addition to learning the stories of the Bible, our Sunday School Program incorporates many family, inter-generational and outreach activities including our Christmas Pageant, Service Day, Bring-A-Friend Sunday, Easter Egg Hunt, annual scholarship drive for the Rwanda School Project and attending SHEMA, the ELCA Synod event geared toward Sunday School aged children.

CONFIRMATION

Confirmation classes are for 6-8 grade students who are here to strengthen and growth in their faith through a 3-year program. This three-year program starts in 6th with studying the Old Testament, continues in a combined 7th and 8th grade class that studies the New Testament and the small catechism. Each part of the program is done during the Sunday school hour following the school year.

WHAT IS CONFIRMATION?

Confirmation is a public rite of the Church that is preceded by a period of instruction designed to help baptized Christians identify with the life and mission of the Christian community. The rite of Confirmation provides an opportunity for the individual Christian, relying on God’s promise of Holy Baptism, to make a personal public confession of faith.

Youth Programs

We have a variety of opportunities for our youth at Community Lutheran Church. These include Youth Sunday where youth run the worship service and participation in the Metro DC Synod’s youth event, Chrysalis. The youth also go on mission trips and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America’s Youth Gathering, and other events throughout the year.

Youth Group

Youth Group is all about games, bonding, and building a Community amongst our youth! Meeting on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30-7:15pm all current 6th – 12th graders are invited to come! There will be games, activities, challenges, surprises and a whole lot of laughter. With Community as our identity, this is a space for our older youth to build a Community identity of their own that is supportive, challenging, encouraging and fun!
